Do you have friends or family members who crinkle up their nose if you offer them wine? Who go, “Eeuuwwww, that’s sour!” when they taste a nice cab or merlot? Well, if you need to serve them something they definitely won’t find sour, Easley Reggae Red might be just the ticket. This wine is described as a red table wine, but it’s not likely it would surface in a Paris cafe. The color is a sort of dark blush. This wine’s aroma is surprisingly robust and pleasant, suggesting honeydew melon and strawberries. These notes continue into the flavor, combined with overwhelming sweetness and just a hit of tartness in the finish that save it from being a complete sugary blowout.
Easley is a small winery in downtown Indianapolis. On a previous trip to that city, I took a tour and found the hosts to be friendly and knowledgeable about the winemaking process. Their offerings definitely tilt toward the sweet end of the spectrum, but not all are as sugary as this one. (Among their offerings is an interesting mead.)
At 10% alcohol, you are more likely to get a sugar high from Reggae Red than get inebriated, but, for its purpose, it’s probably a fine wine. The winery says, “Bursting with fruit and fun, smooth and sweet. Recommended pairing: Pizza or Seafood Gumbo.” We also spotted an interview with one of the proprietors who suggested pairing Reggae Red with chili.
