Our Rating: 7 out of 10
In our never-ending quest to find good, affordable wines, we snagged a bottle of Glen Ellen Reserve Merlot 2004. We found it to be affordable, but not all that appealing. The aroma was weak, and the flavor had nice plummy notes that were offset by an odd earthy characteristic and sharp tannins. Allowing some breathing time cut down on the sharpness, but overall this one wouldn’t make my list of top cheap Merlots.
We tried to learn a bit more about Glen Ellen Winery, but their website was devoid of content. The bottle description claims, “This medium-bodied Merlot is made from grapes that are perfectly ripened and harvestedat the peak of their flavor. Glen Ellen Merlot has cherry and plum flavors with a bright, clear finish.” Not totally inaccurate, perhaps, but a bit more appealing than the actual product.
