Oak Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $4
Maker: Oak Creek Vineyards
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Packaging: Bottle, artificial cork
Our Rating: 6.5 out of 10

We tried the Oak Creek Cabernet Sauvignon (no vintage indicated), having found their Merlot to be fair considering the price, which runs as low as $3 per bottle. The Cab, though, didn’t fare quite as well in our tasting. The color of the wine is a pleasing ruby, but a bit light for a cabernet. The lightness carries over to its slightly spicy aroma and an overall thin flavor. The fruit is weak, and somewhat overpowered by oak. The finish doesn’t get much better. Although we gave the Merlot a cautious thumbs up as an imrovement over jug wine and low end box wine, we suggest giving the cab a pass despite its appealing price.

Oak Creek wines appear to be made by Golden State Vineyards, a firm which sells bulk and private label wine. Their description reads, “Oak Creek Cabernet is big, bold and rich…” Optimistic, I’d say.
