Maker: Renwood Winery
Packaging: bottle, natural cork
Our Rating: 8.5 out of 10
We found the comparatively inexpensive Renwood Sierra Series Zinfandel 2002 on the wine list in a fine restaurant. We haven’t seen it in any of the local wine shops, and they might be missing an appealing buy. This zin begins with a sweetly spicy aroma, with plenty of raspberry. The flavor is not as sweet and fruity as some zinfandels, but rather a smooth and pleasant mix of raspberry, oak, and tannins. The complexity continues to the finish. This zin may not have the intense fruit notes of some old vine zins, but its smoothness and aroma will please both unsophisticated palates and more demanding wine drinkers.
The Wine Gift Guy Blog said, “It was quite fruity, with heavy blackberries and a hint of black pepper. It was dry, medium-bodied, a little more acidic than it should have been and had medium finish.” The Fuzzy Logic blog named this zin one of its top 100 red wines, calling it an “excellent value.”
Renwood Winery isn’t exactly a household name, but has earned a good reputation. I’m going to make a point to hunt down some of their other wines.
