Sutter Home is one of those mass-market products that on can never quit predict. We tried Sutter Home Syrah 2000 and found it a bit harsh. We were actually surprised to find a 2000 Syrah of the mass market persuasion on the shelf. The aroma was quite powerful, mostly berries and spice. The flavor was also strongly spicy with mostly berry and oak notes, but there was a harshness to it that some breathing didn’t totally cure.
The Sutter Home website doesn’t even list a Syrah. Odd, but not totally surprising. Maybe they gave up on this one. It may be reasonably priced, but I’d opt for an Aussie Shiraz.
